The view from the Asulkan Cabin.

Looking up at the Asulkan Glacier.

From the cabin...

Alec, in there for scale.

Requisite foot photo on the way down--my legs!

valley life channels
sore feet and weak knees
cracking of glaciers a dull despair
every mountain has a valley
every glacier, a moraine
every summer, an end.

fire's burning

Wednesday, August 9, 2006

It's creeping towards town, slowly but surely, but so's winter. The fire ain't going anywhere. A lot of tourists are coming in and are creeped out by the fact that it's been burning for a couple weeks, now--and my tone is so nonchalant, so uncaring, to the point of almost sounding glad that it's smoking up the valley. Because I am--because these forests need to burn now before the mother of all forest fires rips through and burns down everything. It could happen, it will happen, and to more places than just Barriere and Kelowna. Prince George, William's Lake, Prince Rupert, ad infinitum... fire's burning, fire's burning, draw nearer.

The 2816 engine, The Empress, at 8:00 am on July 16th.

Look! We got on the train!

Our fabulous, un-airconditioned car.

Following the Illecilliwaet River up to Rogers Pass - that's Mt. Sir Donald.

Joni, smiling despite a headache!

Patti & Mas, celebrating their anniversary.

On the other side of the Pass - the view from Stony Creek Bridge.

The Columbia River, Golden style.

The requisite foot photo. :)

Field, my first hometown.

Passing another CPR train...

Just before Vermillion Lakes, heading into Banff - that's Castle Mountain.

25 hours until adulthood - 18 days until SFU - take that world!
